USB-6009 not showing up in MAX

accidentally posted this to the wrong forum yesterday. . .

I have used a USB-6009 with Windows XP fine for several years.  Last night I disconnected and reconnected its USB cable before shutting down.  This morning it showed up in MAX but failed the self test.  Also, I could not remove the device in MAX even when it was physically disconnected from the system (still showed up green in the device manager but still failed the self test).  I have a spare USB-6009 that also did not work, suggesting DAQmx / MAX was the problem.  After countless disconnects/reconnects and reboots, I finally uninstalled and reinstalled DAQmx and MAX.  Immediately after reinstalling, the problem persisted, but several disconnects/reconnects/reboots later I actually got the USB-6009 icon to go grey with the red X in MAX and then was able to remove it.  After plugging it back in it worked momentarily but then I had to reboot for other reasons and now I can't get it to show up in MAX at all - no devices present.  It shows up in my Windows Device Manager no problem, but not in MAX - any suggestions for things to try?  Thanks!

since posting this, I have upgraded to DAQmx 8.7.1 with still no success - the device shows up with as "USB-6009" with an NI icon in my Windows device manager but is absent in MAX.

Hi britt,

One thing that you may want to try in order to isolate the issue is to:

1) Try swapping the USB port of your device

2) Also, you may want to simply try uninstalling/reinstalling the device from the device manager and see if the problem persists.

3) A third thing to try may be to do a Windows "System Restore" to a point in time where your device works (in case Windows downloaded some driver that is conflicting witht he 6009) - this actually happens to my machine once in a while

4) Another suggestion would be to install the USB-6009 on a different machine and see if it shows up. This should let you know if it is a HW problem.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if any of these work.If they do not, we should at least have a better idea of the source of the problem. Thanks!

Best regards,

Steven

Thanks for the suggestions.  After reinstalling all of the NI hardware drivers (took about 8 hours) the device seems to be working.

Do you (or anyone else) happen to know if it's OK to disconnect a USB cable to an NI device while Windows is running, and/or if an NI USB device is negatively affected by powering down the computer without shutting down Windows?  In other words, can I treat these like normal plug and play USB devices or do they require special care?

Thanks again,
Britt

Hi Britt,

I typically remove the USB-6009 from the PC just like a normal plug and play USB devices and do not see any problems. Has this situation happened to you more than once?

Best regards,

Steven

this is the first time we've had to reinstall everything but the connections to another device (USB-6018) have long been flaky, typically requiring multiple reboots, dis/reconnections, and incantations to get recognized by MAX - the USB-6009 started giving similar problems several weeks before completely refusing to connect.
