The green light is blinking on my USB-8451 but there is no sign of it on Measurement & Automation eXplorer, there is not even a category of "USB" under Devices and Interfaces. The computer is an old XP laptop running MAX version 1.1.3 and LabVIEW 2009. I have tried reinstalling the software for the device to no avail. I also connected this USB-8451 up to a WIN 7 machine and it is detected it just fine.
I tend to think there is something wrong with MAX on my old laptop. I downloaded a LV program called "NI-845x Find Devices.vi" off your site, ran the program with USB-8451 attached, and it returned the alias name "MyUSB-8451", which I remember I had named it a year ago on this old computer. It was working before and it did show up on MAX previously. Now I need to write a new application to run on this old laptop but hesitate because of this. Why would it suddenly stop detecting ?

Hello PeacefulPaul,
Thanks for the post, please check to see if your computer recognizes the device, you can do this by checking the Windows Device Manager. NI Devices normally are found under Data Acquisition Devices under the Device Manager, please check to see if you can see you USB-8451 under this field or if it is detected under another field such as Other Devices.
You can also check to see if the NI Device Loader Service is running on your computer. You should be able to access your Windows Services from Control Panel>>Administrative Tools>>Services. This service loads and initializes NI hardware devices, please check to see that the Status of this service is "Started."
In regards to your Windows XP machine, have there been any notable changed to the hardware or software that may have caused this behavior to occur?
Please try these trouble shooting steps and let me know if you have any additional information regarding this issue, hope this helps!

Thank you for your help. I went into the Device Manager and I found the USB-8451 not under data Acquisition Devices but under its own category, NI-845x Devices. When I looked in Driver Details I found it pointed to C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\NIVIUSBK.sys . Should I update this driver?
Next I went into >>Admin Tools>>Sevices and found NI Device Loader with a "started" status. I pressed [Stop] then hit [Start] button to see if that would make a difference but it did not. I went to the MAX explorer and it was the same status (see attached).
The only changes that has taken place with this computer is that I uninstalled a newer version of LabVIEW that I had loaded during the FRC (FIRST) season, I think that was version 2010 or 2011. With only a gig of memory on this machine that was a challenge to run so I took it off and run the 2009 version s/w. Other than that there have been no changes.
