Unable to Connect cDAQ 9189 to Ubuntu 22.04 Computer via Hardware Configuration Utility

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the appropriate board for this inquiry, so please let me know if there is a more appropriate location to place this.

The problem we are experiencing is that we can no longer connect to our cDAQ 9189 device that is connected to the computer via an ethernet cable. The computer was previously able to connect and communicate with this device, but after unplugging the cDAQ for some time and connecting it to a different device, this computer is no longer able to see it. The same cDAQ is able to be successfully connected to other devices running NI Hardware Configuration Utility with no problems.

Computer Hardware Details:

  • Motherboard: Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE
    • Comment: This motherboard is somewhat unusual and has two Ethernet ports, as well as a USB Ethernet port - is it possible the ethernet drivers are installed in an unusual manner on it, leading to this issue?
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX

Computer Software Details:

  • Ubuntu Version: 22.04.5 LTS
  • Kernel: 6.8.0-57-generic
  • NI DAQmx 2025Q1
  • NI Hardware Configuration Utility 2025Q1

More details on software versions/hardware can be found in the attached technical report from the utility.

The software was installed by following the instructions at this page: https://www.ni.com/docs/en-US/bundle/ni-platform-on-linux-desktop/page/installing-ni-products-ubuntu...

The command "sudo dkms autoinstall" reports no errors.

How the error occurs:

  1. The system is powered on
  2. The cDAQ is plugged in to the Ethernet port. No other Ethernet ports are active when this is done (device does not have access to internet when attempting these steps).
  3. In the Ethernet settings of the computer, the settings are modified as follows:
    1. IPv4 Method: Manual
    2. Addresses:
      1. Address: 169.254.1.1
      2. Netmask: 255.255.0.0
    3. Click "Apply"
    4. The connection status appears as "Connected" at this point.
  4. NI Hardware Configuration Utility is opened (then we have to wait ~30 seconds until the "Discovering Live Hardware" bar at the top disappears)
  5. Click the "+" at the top left.
  6. The cDAQ Appears in the list of devices with a button "Add" next to it. An image of this page is attached titled "HWCU_Add_Device_Page.png"
  7. Clicking "Add" results in one of two outcomes:
    1. "Could not reach the specified system". An image of this error is attached as "HWCU_Error_Page.png"
    2. A different error along the lines of "You must specify either the DNS Hostname or the IPV4 Address".
  8. Manually entering the cDAQ's IP Address (obtained from running the utility on a different computer and connecting it to the cDAQ) in the "By Address" page also results in the same error of "Could not reach the specified system".

On some devices, after these same steps, the cDAQ appears correctly in the Utility and functions correctly with DAQmx software.

Attempted steps to resolve:

  • Reset the hardware configuration utility settings.
  • Delete the NI-Wine folder in the home directory.
  • Fully uninstall and then re-install software entirely (this issue has come up once in the past, and reinstalling with the new 2025Q1 software fixed it at that point, but it did not work this time).
  • Rebooting in safe mode.
  • Switching to an older kernel

Not tried: 2024Q4 software or earlier (but they have previously not worked on this device in the past). If this is a known solution, please let us know.

I am attaching the report generated by the utility in case it is helpful for diagnostic purposes. If there is any other information that would be helpful for assisting in this matter, please let me know and I will try to provide it.

Thank you.
