What criteria should I use in determining if I should use a standalone system?

I'd like to know if there exists a white paper or check list in determining when to utilize a standalone system. Or maybe someone has some common sense steps to take in determining which to utilize. I'm currently gathering information for a new project and am interested in the new standalone compact daq system running Windows 7. However, I'm not sure of it being a better choice than utilizing a laptop as the controller and a regular USB cDAQ system which is a system I have been utilizing for several applications. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
