pxi-6289 digital inputs sinking or sourcing?

I am ordering some sensors that I will read as digital inputs on the PXI-6289. I can get them in two different configurations: PNP (sourcing) or NPN (sinking). I would like to get the PNP version with the assumption that the digital inputs of the PXI-6289 are sinking inputs. Is that correct?

I know that the dital lines can be configured to either inputs or outputs.

How does that electrically work? inputs => sinking, outputs => sourcing? Please explain.

There are a lot of good documents on the ni.com website that explain sinking and sourcing.  I would recommend you take a look at them and hopefully they will answer your questions.  To search the site just go to www.ni.com and then in the top right hand corner there is a search field.
