source of timing & reference clock

I would like to understand concept of timing and reference sources.

When I try to sync between AI, AO (one device) and AWG (other device), I was recommended to use PXI 10M reference clock.

What are purposes or main difference between timming(sample rate) source and reference source?

One of methods for sync between channels is to use the same sample rate.

Is the reference clock needed to phase lock between two or more sampling clocks in each device?

As a beginner, I read a NI-DAQmx course manual and Labview examples.

Only what I understand is there are so many signal routes.

Sometimes, there are exceptions of operation by integrated DAQmx or AWG functions according to device model.

(The help files were not helpful in this work.)

When I bought a device from NI, I didn't get a document for the specified model for paperless policy of NI.

For a someone who want to use more simple and useful way to realize,

What book or document should I read to know the purpose, sync methods or differences of signals?

I would look at the following DeveloperZone Article.
