Is there a way to edit the default position of the symbol refdes and value labels?

Is there a way to edit the default position of the symbol refdes and value labels?

For example, when I place an Op Amp, I want the refdes "U1" and the value "TL072" to appear inside the triangle symbol.  Sure I can move the labels where I want to after I place the op-amp symbol, but then if I go in and edit the footprint or the symbol, the labels default back to a position outside the triangle.

It would be a great time saver if I can edit the symbol so that the labels appear where I want them inside the triangle every time I place a new op amp.  Is there a way I can do that?

Also - how can I edit the symbols and footprints for the default RLC components in the master database so that I don't have to manually edit them after I place every component?

Thanks,

Hi Alex,

You can not set the default position for the component's Refdes, value and label in Multisim. You have to manually drag the labels, value and RefDes if you want to change them.

That would be a useful feature to add to the symbol editor...

Alex,

One way is that after editing components symbol and footprint save it to your user database so that you would be able to use it in the future. The other way is:

1.Undeder Tools>>Database>>Database Manager

2.Under Components tab find the component you wish to change its footprint or symbol

3.Click to highlight it and then hit Edit key

4.Edit the footprint and the symbol

Hope I have covered your question. If I have missed anything or misunderstood your question please let me know.

Yes - I have been doing the first way, the problem with that is for every different value of resistor or capacitor I have to re-save the component with a new name and once I copy the component to my database I can no longer use the resistor or capacitor property window to change values quickly on the fly...  For example, if I place the resistor from the master database and select 1K, but then find out that 2K works better, I just go into the resistors properties and drop down the list and pick 2K.  But, if I had saved the 1K resistor to my database with a custom symbol and footprint, now when I go to the properties the drop down choices are not available, I have to make a copy of my customized 1K resistor, rename it 2K and edit the parameters for simulation as well - much more cumbersome.

The problem with the other way is that with certain components (ie. capacitor, resistor, ect...) the "edit" button is grayed out...  It would be nice if I could change the default symbol and footprint for these components once in the database, so that whenever I place a new component, I don't have to spend extra time changing the footprint and symbol to my custom ones.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex,

As you said the Edit is grayed out for RLC components but you can still change the footprints by clicking on Add.You can also use the Ctrl key to select multiple components at the same time.I think this way you can save some time on editing components.Hope this helps.
