Models of Automotive Spark Plug and/or Ignition Coil

Hello,
Has anyone made a model of an automotive spark plug, and/or an automotive iginition coil.
I have developed each, but not accurately.  I will make these available.
Any help with the models would be appreciated.

Thanks,  Dr. Lurtz

I have not been able to find a Spark Plug spice model. There is a model for a spark gap suppressor on the internet, but I don't know how to implement that in Multisim. You can google for it by typing in "Spark Gap Spice Model". This may give you something that you can work with to create your own model.

As far as the ignition coil it is basically a step up transformer that is switched by the points. This in combination with a capacitor(condenser in automotive terms) produceas extreme high voltage kick. What I am going to do is post a very basic circuit for you to look at that you may be able to take further and produce a more accurate representation. To simulate the spark plug I used a voltage controlled switch that is set to 1Kv. This will give a visual indication of the high voltage kick.

I hope this may help and that you might be able to get something that you can use from it.

Lacy,

Thanks for the model.  I have attached my circuit for review.  Let me know what you think.  I used an SCR as the spark plug (altered the parameters so that it has a 50KV breakdown, and a 2KV trigger.  The ignition coil is shown.  The placement of the inductors and the resistors are critical.

Thanks,

It works great. A lot better than the rudementary one that I slapped together last night. The pulse looks more like what it should be. Nice job. Very nice job.

Now you need a car to put it intoSmiley Very Happy
