Variable power supply component or VI?

Does it exist in any shape for using with Multisim?

But without ELVIS board?

Just for simulate purpose on the schematic capture.

(somethig like variable batery)

Thanks!

For imitation variable battery it is possible to use a Voltage regulator (for example, LM117)  with a interactive potentiometer

Thanks!

I thought on something like this (every combination is in el. circuit possible) but it is bad that

with so much instruments (DMM, Scopes even Tek. and Agil. scopes) there is no such apparatus

which is practicaly on every test bench.

It is also not possible such a  combination put int another Instrument because Multisim not alow the interactive

elements (potentiometer) in this operation.

Hi Drasko,

Your point is very valid. Sometimes, I need variable power supplies too and I use one of the following:

  1. Potentiomenter connected between highest and lowest voltage of power supply. Wiper terminal is connected to GAIN_2_PIN with E set to 1. Output of GAIN_2_PIN is power supply terminal. You can use VOLTAGE_CONTROLLED_VOLTAGE_SOURCE also.
  2. Use Function Generator with Amplitude set to 0 and Offset set to the power supply voltage.

Both work pretty well. Its not as good as a real benchtop power supply, but good enough for most of my circuits. You can change the value of the output voltage during simulation.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

In the academic products, you can also access the NI ELVIS VIs from the instrument toolbar. Just look for the little NI ELVIS icon. Then you can use the NI ELVIS variable power supply in any schematic.

Thanks for suggestions!

Both LM 117 reg. and VC Source is enough for simple testing.

Which F. gen? Agilents?

And of course double PS unit with voltage tracking will be better (like mine on the bench)

Best regards!

Thanks for the suggestion about the double output and tracking voltage functionality! I'm copying this suggestion to the feature request.

Use the regular function generator, not the Agilent one. The Agilent one has 50 ohm output impedance where as the regular one does not. Click Simulate>>Instruments>>Function Generator.

Shauna

I noticed this Icon and installed the ELVIS 4.01 software and got the VPS on the

schematic but it is impossible to work with this one (Properties are inactive) until you have

the ELVIS prototyping boarad connected on the USB port of the PC!

(it is stated on the Help of the ELVIS product)

Thanks for attention!

Well

Does it mean that you are working (programming) the new Instrument for Multisim: VPS?

If so, beside two tracking sources please put the current limitation knob which

convert with this function voltage sources into constant current sources!

Two aux. AC outputs are also desirable.

Off course two digital display for state of the VPS is welcome.

Best Regards!

Hi Drasko,

We have your request in our feature request database. We get a lot of feature requests! Each release, we try to implement as many as we can, but cannot get to all of them. We try to implement those that get requested most often. So, we can't promise that we will implement the virtual power supply for the next version. We will do our best to implement your suggestions when we do get to it.
