multisim student - Would I qualify?

Hi Guys,

I have started to learn electronics and am interested in Multisim Student edition for home use.

I am not on any academic course is it still possible for me to use this version os multisim?

Thanks for any help

Andy

Hi Andy,

Unfortunately the student edition requires that you be an actively enrolled student - our distributor requires a student ID for purchase.

As a hobbyist or casual user, you might want to check out Multisim Base, which is a great capture tool and provides very basic simulation capabilities that should be adequate for your purposes.

Best regards,

Natasha

Hi Natasha,

Thanks very much for the info.

It's a shame as £1400 for the Base version is a hefty outlay for a hobbyist!

All the best

Hi Andy,

I understand your concerns and will pass on your feedback! Multisim is generally focused on academia and professionals as you can probably tell from the website (although some hobbyists do use it), but as a result of this focus it can be easy to overlook where this is demand.

Thanks again for the feedback and I'll pass it along!

Hi Natasha,

Thanks for that, I must admit I think a "Hobby" version would be a great idea.

All the best

There is a free version from Analog Devices that I use.  It (obviously) has a lot of the Analog Devices components and a lot of general purpose stuff.  Grab it here or Google "Multisim Analog Devices"

Thats a pretty good idea. It has similar restrictions as the student version, but it does not include Ultiboard, our PCB layout tool. Also, the Analog Devices Edition that is currently available is quite old; it is equivalent to Multisim 10.0, so it may not have some of the features that are available in our latest version. If you want a tool to verify your circuit simulation, it still works pretty well.

Be sure to download and check out our latest version of Multisim for your evaluation! It is free and available at:

Hi Yi,

Thanks for the info, I have already got the evaluation version and I must admit I like it a lot.

At my current level I am looking for circuit simulation, in the future Ultiboard would be very useful.

Unfortunately it is hard to justify me spending that amount of money on what is just a hobby, the Wife is already not best pleased with the boxes of components and smelly soldering iron. A large bill could put her over the edge!

A hobby edition at a few hundred dollars would be perfect for me, maybe NI could think along these lines, I cannot be the only one in this position.

Thanks for your help

Andy

Haha, oh boy, I hear you. I remember soldering on the stove with the range hood turned on to vent out the flux vapours. I find that the type of solder helps in the "enjoyment" (or lack there of) of the people around you. I find a good solder with a real pine rosin is actually somewhat pleasant to work with. The trouble is, its hard to find that stuff. The last roll of it (the only one I have now) I found at Radio Shack a while back. Unfortunately, they changed their supplier and it smells like burning plastics when you use them now. Oh well.
