Context menu won't open

I started TestStand 4.2, LabVIEW had not been started by me. I open a sequence file and then under MainSequence I click open a subSequence. I click a labView step and wait for the adapter to initialize.

Then I right click the step as I want to edit the code. The context menu does not appear. Then I click another step and the hour glass appears. I take a break and come back and it's still glassing. On a whim I click the LV icon on the taskbar and the initial screen pops up. I minimize it and now TestStand is responding again.

This seems a bit abnormal to me. I tried rebooting, tried different steps but still the same. However after I have touched LabView I can close and restart TestStand and it works normally. Coulld it be because I have labView setup to skip the initial screen?

Thanks,

jvh

Hi jvh,

I have a couple clarification questions for you:

  • What do you mean when you say after you've touched LabVIEW it works normally?  Does this mean that after TestStand launches LabVIEW, you click on LabVIEW in the taskbar to bring it up then close LabVIEW, close TestStand and upon reopening you don't see the behavior you're describing?
  • What do you mean by you have LabVIEW setup to skip the initial screen?  Do you mean you've enabled the option to skip the Getting Started Window?  If so, do you still see this behavior if you disable that option?

Yes. Or I can leave one or both open.

Don't know how to disable that option.

Thanks

Hi jvh,

You can disable that option by going toTools>>Options>>Environment.  In the General section, unable the option Skip Getting Started window on launch.

I disabled the Skip option, rebooted, and the problem went away. I re-enabled it, rebooted and it did not come back.

Also notice that now when TestStand is closed it closes the instance of LabVIEW it had opened. Before LV stayed open when TS was closed.

Hi jvh,

I'm glad to hear the issue you were seeing with TestStand starting up LabVIEW seems to be fixed.

The behavior for TestStand opening/closing LabVIEW should be as follows:

  • If LabVIEW was opened before TestStand, TestStand should leave LabVIEW open when it exits.
  • If LabVIEW was NOT opened before TestStand, TestStand will open LabVIEW when it needs it.  If no VIs are open, when you close TestStand it will close LabVIEW

It sounds like you are see a few different instances of very unusual behavior.  If possible, you should consider a clean image/install of your OS as well as TestStand and LabVIEW.

Cheers,

For a clean TS/LV install should they first be removed using the Windows add/remove tool?

Hi jvh,

You are correct.  If you wish to do a uninstallation and reinstallation of LabVIEW and TestStand, you should always use Add/Remove programs from the Window's Control Panel.   Also, as Michael had mentioned in his previous post, if you have a clean Window's image, this might be a good option to look into as there seem to be several instances of strange behavior with your system.
