Project Information
Project Title: Blind Navigator : Assistive Vision for the Blind
Hardware & Software Used:
hardware used - Ultrasonic sensors HC Sr04, Vibrator motors, Atmega 328p, etc.
software used- Eclipse for making the android applications, Eagle for Schematics, AVR Studio
What challenge/problem are you trying to solve through your application:
The problems blind people face regularly are :
1. They cannot walk independently due to the presence of local obstacles
2. They cannot read text printed in books, newspapers, etc.
3. They cannot find local objects required daily like our toothbrush, toothpaste etc
4. They cannot navigate to the desired destination as they do not know the path to the destination.
How does your application solves the above mentioned challenge/problem:
We have developed 3 android applications and an embedded device to solve these problems.
The embedded device helps in detecting local obstacles.
The three android applications help in reading, navigation and objct detection.
Description of Project:
The Embedded Device : It consists of 3 ultrasonic sensors and 4 vibrator motors. 2 ultrasonic sensors provide a wide range for detecting local obstacles, and 3rd ultrasonic sensor is slightly inclined so that it stays horizontal while walking for detecting staircases, potholes, footpaths, etc. The amplitude of vibration of the motors depends on the distance of the obstacle from the device.
Android Application 1 - Reading : It extracts text from the image being captured by the camera of the android phone and speaks that out. We have used tesseract android tools based on the Tesseract OCR engine maintained by Google.
Android Application 2 - Object Detection : We have followed the color detection approach for detecting local objects. We attached unique color markers on the objects. We are implementing the opencv library on android. it is a library of programming fuctions for computer vision. As the object appears in the camera frame, the application speaks out that it has detected the object we are looking for.
Android Application 3 - Navigation : It detects the current location automatically using GPS. It has 2 buttons, one is the speak destination and the other is to get directions.
LabVIEW : We are working on image processing in labVIEW. It aims at giving an idea of the environment mainly by assisting while walking as the person should not walk right in the centre of the road, he should always keep left , and also in keeping safe from moving obstacles as the embedded device may fail sometimes.
