Project Information

Project Title: Model reduction technique of drill string dynamics to mitigate stick slip during drilling.

Hardware & Software Used: Softwares : LabVIEW and MATlab. NO Hardware is used since Hardware in Loop technique is used since the experiments cannot be performed in actual drilling rig at this stage.


What challenge/problem are you trying to solve through your application: Through model reduction technique of drill string dynamics, the dominant dynamics are well represented by the reduced order model in which the control strategies to mitigate stick slip can be applied in less harder manner. Occurence of stick slip during drilling and the representation of the same by the original and the transformed model are represented in this work. Way forward would be to implement Non Linear Model Predictive Controller to mitigate stick slip while drilling. This is important since torsional vibrations like stick slip leads to breakage of the drill pipe which increases rig time and cost. Mitigation of this would improve the drilling efficiency as well as reduce the rig time and cost, majorly the shut downs and incidents in the rig floor.

How does your application solves the above mentioned challenge/problem:

The reduced order model is very well suitable to implement the Model Predictive controllers, through which the strategies can be applied to control certain parameters like angular velocity of the drill string, weight on bit, etc., thtough which the dynamics of the complete string is taken care of and will mitigate the stick slip.

Description of Project:

The model reduction technique in implemented on drill sting dynamics in an attempt to mitigate stick slip during drilling. this code was implemented using LabVIEW to reduce a sixth order model. Dynamics of the 86 order model of the actual system is also compared with the reduced order model of the same. MPC may be implemented down the line of this project.
