What challenge/problem are you trying to solve through your application:

We have developed a system which enables visually impaired people to experience the external world and also easily direct them to their destination with ease. Our intention is to build the project which will make life of visually impaired better.

How does your application solves the above mentioned challenge/problem:

We have built a system which will help  the  visually impaired people to detect obstacles in front of them and  help them to provide a obstacle free path.

Description of Project:

A)  Detection of Eye Movement:

We are using two USB Cameras, the outputs of which are fed into NI LABVIEW. One camera is fixed in front of the eye facing the eye ball which will track the movement of the eyes.

An image processing VI is developed using Vision development module of LABVIEW to track the movement of eye of the blind .The Coordinates of the eye ball are used to send commands to control the motion of servo motors upon which second camera to capture the images in the desired direction of the blind person and Ultrasonic sensor are mounted.Servo motor is synchronized with the same direction as that of eyes of the blind person. When Eyeball movement is detected in left or right position signal is sent to Chipkit through NI Visa.An arudino based program is written to send amount angle of rotation required to turn in that direction.

B) Detection of obstacles and issue of audio warning:

The second camera will capture the images of the object coming on its way. Alongside Ultrasonic sensor is used to read the distance between the blind and the obstacles. The Ultrasonic sensor works by transmitting a burst signal and providing an output pulse that corresponds to the time required for the burst echo to return to the sensor. By measuring the echo pulse width, the distance to target can easily be calculated. Distance is sent through chipkit to labview using Visa.Labview VI processesthe data and sens suitable instruction to headset.

We have  developed a preliminary VI to detect the obstacles using Labview and Vision development module. After image processing Labview VI will provide suitable audio warning like the object on his way and will also let him know about the proper direction in which he needs to move. The pre-recorded audio is played to visually impaired people through headset connected to Laptop.
