Error message "nipxi service failed to start"

I've got a laptop running Win 2K SP1 and LabView 6.1.
Infrequently I have "unsave removal of device" errors. The only thing I see in the Event Viewer that might relate is

The nipxi service failed to start due to the following error:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Any ideas are appreciated

The NIPXI service was a component of NI-VISA ver 1.2 which ships with NI-VXI for PCI-MXI-2 ver 2.0. If you uninstall old versions of NI-VXI and NI-VISA and install version 2.6 of NI-VXI (from our website http://www.ni.com/support/vxi/drivers.htm) and 3.2 of NI-VISA (which is an option when installing LabVIEW 6.1) this should keep this service from failing to load. I am unsure if your device errors are related, but this would be a great place to start. To me it sounds like you may actually be having errors related to your PCI or PCMCIA bus in your laptop.
