It works now.
I found the driver in the windows\inf folder of the previous computer it was installed on. The PC drivers were in fact for the modules within the pxi-1042 chassis...strange
This PXI-1042 system and software are terribly bad. For 25k+$ with the modules in it, it should have come with better software and documentation than that. There are 7 cdroms with no clear path of installation. I am looking on ni.com for software udpates for all the small pieces of softwares and drivers to improve it, but I found nothing on pxi-1042, 3010, 3020, etc.
If I have to spend more than 3 other days on these piece of shit of equipment, I will throw everything in the garbage and get some decent HP hardware. It is sad because the ni hardware appears ok.

Sorry you were having trouble getting going Eric. Your PXI-1042 should have shipped with a User Manual outlining the Installation process including the PXI Platorm Services CD that installs the drivers for the chassis. This should be the same for all the National Instruments cards that go in the chassis, they should have a getting started/user manual to describe what needs to be installed. If you ever lose these you can download them from here. or from the product pages under "resources"(here is the one for the 1042)
As it sounds like you have discovered the drivers and updates page on NI.com is organized by driver class( DAQ, Instrument Control, etc.) so you can not search by model number easily, that is why it is important to look in the getting started guides to figure out what software/drivers you will need.
I would link you to the 3010, 3020 but I am not familiar with any current NI products with those numbers, but if you provide me with more information I will be happy to help you identify any of the missing pieces you still need.
I think you will find that the NI hardware will be more than "okay" 🙂

Eric, I'm am looking for the drivers for this com card as well. How did you determine which one was the correct driver in the windows/inf folder? Thanks!

Hello Guruluu,
You can also determine the various driver and software versions using Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). MAX populates all of the installed software including toolkits, development suites, and drivers. Below is a link that describes this:
https://knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails?id=kA03q000000YGwTCAW&l=en-US
You can refer to the driver versions in MAX and the product manuals of your hardware to determine if you have the necessary software. If any of the drivers are dated newer than required, I would consult the README file to see if the particular driver supports the hardware. However, an updated driver is more likely to support the same hardware set of prior versions.
