PXI-8105 does not boot when all usb ports are loaded.

PXI Controller fails to boot when all USB ports are connected.

Fails to boot = no BIOS, video, or HD activity.

- Linksys wireless dongle
- HP Laser Jet Printer
- Keyboad
- Mouse

Basically, when all the devices above are plugged in to the PXI 8105,
it fails to boot?
But when one of the USB devices is removed it is able to boot?

Here is what I tried:

- Connected all devices above to my DELL Inspiron laptop and no issue
boots up fine with or without power supply connected
- Connected all devices above to my DELL tower and the tower boots just fine
- Tried to connect an external USB hub with external power and still
same issue when all USB ports are connected?

We saw this same issue with the PXI 8186 and gave the same feedback
but the problem continues to exist in the 8105?

The PXI controllers cost more than the most powerful laptop money can
buy.  It lacks the capability of booting when all USB ports
are being used?  Did NI forget to test this when they shipped this product?
I ask this because it was a know issue in the older controllers.

Hello,
Could you test all possible configurations of your devices? In other words just the mouse and 1 other device, then just the mouse and 2 other devices, etc... Can the controller boot? with all devices attached does the controller stay powered on? We need to see if it ONLY happens when all devices are connected (which I’m assuming will be the case).  If this is the case then they need to try some other USB devices other than the ones listed – for example try a couple memory sticks and the keyboard/mouse.  This should work fine which will prove to that it has nothing to do with ALL USB ports being connected during boot.  The problem is most likely power consumption.

In our manuals we specify the minimum amount of power needed for each USB port and your particular devices might draw more current then the PXI controller is able to supply. Most labtops and desktop manufacturers will supply more than the minimum amount of power.  The USB spec only states a minimum not a maximum.

When trying to connect through the powered USB hub can you verify that the hub is externally powered? The biggest thing is we need to find out if it’s only these specific products the customer listed by testing with other USB devices such as memory sticks.

If you have a spare 8105 could you also check if you are experiencing the same issues.

Please Let me know how the tests go

Hi anewsome,

Which devices you have connected on the controller? Did you try the steps that chris_amadasun suggest? Also, another step that maybe you would like to check is if the BIOS you have enable the option to boot using an USB device.

Regards.

I had this problem when I only had a monitor connected via DVI cable and no USB devices at all.

The boot from USB option is not enabled.

Thanks,

Adam

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, Which OS are you using with the PXI controller? this is a known issue with the PXI 8106. And it was solved with a BIOS update, but the OS is important to troubleshoot the issue.

Regards.

Hi anewsome,

Has the controller ever booted before? Windows 7 is not a supported OS for the 8105, though it has occasionally worked in the past. Additionally, what BIOS version are you using? Does the controller boot to the BIOS?
