PXI-8176 and generations newer.

Our manufacturing facility currently has multiple testers with the PXI 8176 control units. We also have the PXI-8186 and anothe one controller that is one generation newer..  What I would like to know from NI. is a location where I can find a list such as this one.

I am prepareing a document to upgrade our test units.  several years ago we purchased a replacement on ebay..it didn't last long.

8176  family launched 2000  obsolete 2004

8186  family launched 2002  obsolete 2006

etc---

Hey Rich,

I'd be happy to help, but I'm not sure I understand what you're looking for. We could find you a controller to do what you need to, if that's what you're lookin to accomplish. Can you clarify?

Preliminiarily, I have found that the support pages for each product show the product's status, such as this one for the 8176:

https://www.ni.com/en-us/support/model.pxi-8176.html

I don't know of a list that exists for this information, however.

Regards,

I was told a couple years ago I couldn't buy a replacement PXI 8176. If you have one can I get a quote please.

The one we purchased off of E-Bay didn't last long and of course didn't have any kind of a warranty.

We no longer sell that particular model, but there are newer control modules which can accomplish the same and more as you're current controller can.

You should ask for a quote from these guys: http://www.artisantg.com/TestMeasurement/55129/National_Instruments_PXI_8174_PXI_8175_PXI_8176_PXI_c...

they appear to be the biggest place to get used and surplus NI equipment other than NI themselves.

Artisan does repair and offers trade-in. biggest benefit for you is they have a warranty.

Let me know if it works out for you.

Thanks, but this is where I have run into a monumental  *-storm. The software was written in CVI 7 and the controller was an 8176. I purchased a MXI and a Windows 7-32 industrial Rack Mount. I worked with your engineers and got everything installed with legacy drivers and got the application to compile in CVI 2013. This is where the months of sweat equity were flushed down the drain. For some reason the functions written using the drivers from CVI 7 will not function in the CVI 2013 / Windows 7-32 environment. It was recommended to replace the hard drive in the box, start over with Windows 2000, or maybe XP (iffy) and reload everything with Legacy drivers and CVI 7. Then, I might have success, but only at 50 - 50 odds. There was an offer to rewrite the original software, at a high price, to function in the new environment. The production line is at the end of life. In a year or so all will be scrap. There is no profit left to fund the upgrade. I was looking for the start and end dates for each controller family. I was making a recommendation about the future purchases of hardware, obsolescence, and upgrade paths. I managed to track down ballpark dates but am still missing one key element.

If an 8176 were referred to as Gen-1 what Generation is being marketed today ? How far behind is this controller ?

that would be question for NI. but there is a PXI-8186 and PXI-8196. looks like the pxi-8196 is obsolete. but instead of going to current gen (big $$). you could go to 8186 series or 8196 series if you are worried about age.

I have not really seen a decent price break on these units. Basically we need to get one unit back up soon, we have cannibalized a few pieces from another machine to keep production going.  I contacted Artisan to get a quote. We can pull the hard drive and put it on a new controller and the line will not miss a beat. It has become a nightmare to try and move to any other generation controller. It is like some special process is involved that prevents us from starting from a clean slate and rebuilding the controller from the ground up. Thanks for recommending the site.

If you are interested in discussing your non-obsolete options, you can call a Technical Sales Representative at NI at (877) 387-0015. They should be able to help you around whatever obstacles you are facing.
