What do you want to do ?
Just control digital IO (light, door, stores, ...)
more sophisticated light (DALI, EIB,DMX)
a little bit heater, ventilation, clima but nothing real scientific?
or control most main appliances , do R&D ?
I'm currently building up my 'smart' home, since I end up with 80+ DI and 50 DO and only little analog IO I decided to use a standard industrial (Beckhoff or Wago) PLC.
I really would love to use LabVIEW, however currently its more than 3 times the hardware cost, and since there is almost always some home left at the end of the money 😉
Another point (for me) is over all power consumption, a small PLC is about 9 W plus additional actors ..
A PXI system for home automation is like using a formular 1 racing car to do some shopping ... You can do it ... And it fits perfectly into the 19" rack together with the home media server, NAT, Router .....

Hey macbett,
As Henrik pointed out, it might be useful to gather some additional information about your application as far as your requirements go to be able to give you some suggestions. We actually have a Product Advisor page on our website which might be useful for you in trying to build/spec out a system. You can find all of our available product advisors here : http://www.ni.com/advisor/
As a sidenote, here's a cool system one of our NI employees made to automate his home sprinkler system with NI Fieldpoint : http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-2323
