CompactRIO Takes Flight: Creating a Helicopter Autopilot

Abstract: Examine the autopilot design and learn how the CompactRIO platform was ideal for the rapid turnaround required to complete the design and build cycle of a fully functional autopilot with yaw, pitch, roll, and speed control in less than four months. This rapid cycle allowed both software and hardware adjustments to the flight control during lunch based on flight testing in the morning as well as additional tweaks made that evening. It enabled two iterations per day, which is much more than a custom design could allow.
