Abstract: Railroad switches are the most likely points for train derailment. Felix, developed using NI Single-Board RIO, LabVIEW, and the Vision Development Module, is the first robot that can automatically measure the conditions of railroad switches. The robot is equipped with sensors for artificial vision-profilometers-which can create a 3D reconstruction of the inspected surfaces. Vision algorithms then extract the dimensional parameters to detect defects. At this session, explore the lessons learned while developing Felix, the robot that increases safety for train operators and passengers.
