Abstract: Singapore’s energy diversification dreams are limited by its scarcity of land (~710 km2 of country area with 5.5 million inhabitants), so new ideas are needed on where solar photovoltaic systems ultimately get deployed. A new idea in not only Singapore but worldwide is using floating photovoltaic systems on water bodies. These multimillion-dollar assets need to be properly monitored for their welfare on water. The proposed system uses an inertial measurement unit to track each platform’s 6 degrees of freedom motion. Using a CAN interface between sensors and the CompactRIO hardware and LabVIEW software, engineers and stakeholders can supervise several floating systems on a 1 MW testbed project.
