Abstract: Group NIRE’s test facility has successfully implemented an electric distribution control strategy for an electric grid with high concentrations of wind and energy storage systems. The distribution control strategy uses multiple connection points with 9.4 MW of generators. The test facility features the following for its distribution control strategy: (1) $1.5M upgraded distribution electrical lines carrying power to consumer loads over 15 square miles; (2) 9.4 MW of wind turbine generators from GE, Alstom, Gamesa, and Vestas; (3) phasor measurement units and network sampling electric grid 20 to 30 times a second; and (4) weather forecasting and cyber security systems.
