TS9558: Building a Rapid Control Prototyping System for Engine Research and Development

Speaker: Dan White (Chief Engineer, LHPES)

Variable valve timing is used in internal combustion engines to improve engine breathing across the operating speed range. Engine researchers need to independently control exhaust and intake valve opening and closing profiles while measuring performance impacts across the entire torque-speed range. At this session, learn how LHP Engineering Solutions designed a rapid prototyping system using CompactRIO with LabVIEW FPGA that provides independent control of exhaust and intake valve lift at 0.1 crank degree resolution. The solution demonstrates how the research team uses the LHP Panthera RCP Suite to build The MathWorks, Inc. Simulink® models to test various valve profiles in real time.
