Toshiba Railway Substation Energy Asset Monitoring Using CompactRIO

In Japanese railway substations, it is desirable to monitor a wide range of parameters and perform real-time load condition analysis. Toshiba standardized on CompactRIO because NI tools are the worldwide standard, provide tight synchronization technology over Ethernet, and offer connectivity with other devices including non-Toshiba product. This system supports the IEC 61850 electrical substation automation protocol and connected to a SCADA system.

Hello,I really appreciated your presentation on « Toshiba Railway Substation Energy Asset Monitoring Using CompactRIO”. It is very interesting. It is a big challenge to achieve a high-speed monitoring system using a complex network, based on cRIO for measurement management.

I am very interested in your toolkit solution “provides hight level Vis (APIS) to create a complete 61850 solution wich runs on LabVIEW Realtime” because I had this need when I tried to connect IEC 61850 hardware on my Windows PC with WinPcap.

I thought that the custom Ethernet communications (no UDP and/or no TCP) was unavailable with LabVIEW VIs on RT ? Is this a NI solution ? Part of this toolkit is it available ? I want to congratulate you for your work. Luc

Luc - we're glad you found the Toshiba presentation useful for your R&D. To help answer your question, there currently is no custom 61850 Ethernet functions available on RT as a product; the VIs in the presentation interface with low level operating system functions to fully control the Ethernet layers and comply with the 61850 specification. However, it's likely that NI might develop a LabVIEW toolkit solution to do this in the near future. Please let us know if you'd like for someone to contact you directly to discuss more about our R&D roadmap information related to this area.
