I believe I was told that the CompactRIO’s USB port does not implement a standard USB interface; therefore can not work with all USB peripherals. At present time it can only work with hard drive and some flash drives. Is this still a valid statement? Because I really wanted to use the CompactRIO’s USB port with a USB serial interface such as your NI USB-232/4. Is this possible? Note I am aware of the CompactRIO Serial Interface modules. I really would like to use the USB port if possible.
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide Fro10-26-2009 09:54 AM
Fro,
As you noted the USB port on the cRIO controller can only be used to access USB memory devices, like a memory stick or harddrive. It can not be used to access other devices with or without the USB to serial converter.

Is there a plan to incorporate into the VXworks or Pharlap code the drivers to allow anything other than memory devices on the cRIO controller?

Hi Fro,
I wanted to bring to your attention the RS-232 port that is on the controller as well. Is there a particular reason you would like to use the USB port for communcation over the RS-232 port or serial modules?

This is something we are investigating, but there are no definite plans when this feature might be added.

Kristen wanted to know why I do not wish to use the RS-232 port on the controller or use C series serial modules. Well I will need at a minimum of two and a maximum of eight serial ports. I already have USB to serial devices and I do not have any RS232 C series serial modules, I only have RS422 C series serial modules. I was hoping I could just plug the USB to serial devices I have already into the cRIO controller, that way no further purchasing is necessary.
