RT Chassis, FPGA and Custom Device (Veristand) questions

I am still learning about RT systems so please excuse any obvious questions that I may ask.

We have a fairly complex RT system consisting of a number of instruments (SMUs (4), Analog Output, Analog Input, etc) that are built into a single integrated Custom Device using Veristand.

I have done some limited work in LabVIEW for FPGAs and I am VERY new to VeriStand and Custom Devices

The question(s) I have concern the PXIe-7976 R (FPGA based RS-485). We currently have a working interface where we can send data to and from the card, but it was developed from the point of view of a Custom Device for VS. We need to be able to send and receive data using LabVIEW and TestStand.

I contend that using a LabVIEW direct access interface would be faster and more efficient than using the complexity of Veristand and a Custom Device.  Indeed when the current integrated CD is started, communication to the 7976 card stops.  If we change the SW/HW interface to a simpler data exchange to the FIFOs, wouldn't that work, or is it better to go ahead, integrating the 7976 card into the integrated CD?  The 7976 card should be able to operate independent of any custom devices configured on the RT chassis correct?

Ideas? Comments? Best practices? If someone could point me to an example of using the PXIe-7976R card with LabVIEW it would be greatly appreciated.  I tried looking, but again, I don't think I know enough to ask the intelligent questions.

Thanks for any and all insight.
