rio daisy chain / network

This question would apply to cRIO or sbRIO, I'm considering two sbRIO cards.  The two sbRIO cards will be separated by a slip-ring, they can be connected through the slip-ring BUT once built, I will only have physical access to the sbRIO card on the stationary side of the slip-ring.  Will I be able to program and data log with both sbRIOs with this architecture?  each sbRIO card appears to have just one ethernet port, can they be daisychained ?

Hi bmann2000,

Thank you very much for contacting National Instruments. This would be possible to do this I reckon with this architecture if you have a switch connecting the two sbRIO's together. Therefore giving each sbRIO its own specific IP address.

I would recommend you to get into contact with your local Field Sales Engineer and Inside Sales Engineer here at National Instruments to discuss your application. They can be contacted on 01635-523-545.

Ethernet networks share the same copper, so despite only one ethernet port on each sbRIO, I figure I can splice the cables together.  My main concern is the ability to log data while several 2KHz control loops are running on the sbRIOs.  I understand packet scheduling is a feature of LabVIEW RT, but I've never used it in this way.  Will I definitely require packet scheduling to avoid jitter on the control loops ?

Hi there,

What I reckon you are referring to is that the communication is Token ring based, ie. the data can be passed  via a ring method. This method is uncommon nowadays, and has been superseeded by the Starmethod. Token ring networks have since declined in usage and the standards activity has since come to a standstill as switched Ethernet has dominated the LAN/layer 2 networking market.

Our sbRIO adheres to the later standards of 100Base-Tx style connection. You will need to use a switch to communicate with the two sbRIOs...
