Thanks for reading this. I posted this topic in the "RF Measurement Devices' Forum but it got rejected. Even though my configuration includes RF Devices, I think the problem I am having is essentially coming from the PXIe-5450 Function Generator...So I hope this is the appropriate forum.
I am helping a grad student to setup a 7 year old (purchased used) PXI RF system for his thesis work. The PXI RF system is a PXIe-1075 chassis with a PXIe-5663E VSA, and a PXIe-5673E VSG. We are having some trouble in getting the VSG to work.
The PXIe-5673E (RF VSG) is made of the following modules:
Slot10: PXIe-5450 Baseband I/Q Generator (Arb Func Generator)
Slot12: PXIe-5611 UpConverter / IQ Modulator
Slot13: PXIe-5652 RF Generator
The PXIe-5450 is configured as "AWG" and PXIe-5652 is configured as "LO" in the PXIe-5611.
In MAX, all three devices in the PXIe-5673E pass self-test. The external wiring also appears to be correct, and exactly as described in the NI documentation for 5673E. Please see attached files for MAX configuration.
When I used the RSFG Soft Front Panel, I am not able to open a session to the VSG. It gives a timeout error (Please see attached file for error).
The RSFG Soft Front Panel is able to open a session with the PXIe-5652, and able to output a CW RF output. So the PXIe-5652 is working Ok. So I suspect the problem lies in the PXIe-5450.
There is a separate Test Panel in MAX for the PXIe-5450. This also give a similar timeout error.
I also tried a basic LabVIEW NI-FGEN shipping example with the PXIe-5450, and I am getting an error there as well (please see attached file for error).
So I am unable to proceed...since this is a used system, I have no way of knowing if was working before. I am hoping this is just a configuration issue.
Thanks again.

Hey Sundaram!
Because of the timeout error in the 5450 I too agree this is the correct forum and we should concentrate here.
-Which version of NI-FGEN do you have? It appears in MAX but it doesn't show the version.
-What result do you get from hitting "Self-Test" in MAX?
-Try moving the 5450 to another slot

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
1) The NI-FGEN is version 17.1 (current version)
2) The MAX Self-test for the 5450 is always Passing.
3) I can't move it another slot as it needs to be to the left of the Upconverter Module.
It is failing to generate even a Standard wf, the ones that don't need to be downloaded. Could it be expecting a trigger signal or clock signal, and timing out on that?
Thanks

Can you generate any waveform using the Test Panels?

No i could generate anything from the Test Panel in MAX. It gives a Timeout error after a few seconds.

How are the LEDs?

If we can't get past this point then I wouldn't recommend concentrating on anything else.

Hi A-Guz-man
Thanks for your continued help!
Regarding the LEDs status:
ACCESS LED is green at power up, changes to Amber when I run an LabVIEW example for FGEN, then Green again.
ACTIVE LED is off at power up, then flashes Red quickly when the LabVIEW example is running, then Off again.
In your opinion do you think this is a device hardware problem (and not a software, wiring, or config problem)? If so, I can send it to NI for repair.
I also remember seeing an error that said "PLL could not lock to the AWF external Reference clock" when I run the MAX Test Panel for the RFSG which uses the PXIe-5450 as the AWG for I/Q Generation.
Thanks!

Hi A-Guz-Man,
Do you have any further thoughts on this issue? Do you think that this a hardware error such as out of calibration?
thanks!

Hey!
Focusing again in just the 5450.
-Check the temperture of your 5450.
-Eliminate all cables connected there and try again to output a simple sine wave from NI MAX using the Testpanel for the 5450.
-Move the 5450 of slot and try the above step.
If everything else fails I would say is a good time to call support.
