Project Information

Title: MY HAND (Artificial hand)

Description: 3D-printer has been used to design MY HAND which is easily accessible and reasonable price than other artificial hands.

The Challenge;

  1. 1. Existing artificial hands are mostly manually controlled. However, MY HAND is controlled automatically using EMG(electromyography)
  2. 2. Conventionally, inexpensive artificial hands use heavy motors to generate high power, but MY HAND uses shape memory alloy (SMA) as actuators to generate high power instead of motors. This reduces the overall weight of MY HAND making it light.
  3. 3. Mostly existing products have limited motions. , MY HAND is not only cheap, it can also perform a lot of actions like the hand of a non-disabled for instance typing, using chopsticks, handshake etc.)

The Solution:

  1. 1.

The SMA actuators which are fixed on PCB can bend 90degree with1.5v and 3.0v.

The actuators which are located at each finger joints can bend each finger joints and spread out the fingers as we want. As the result of that, MY HAND can do the actions most hands do.

The LabVIEW graphical programming helps the beginners to make the code easily. Also it’s easy to combine different programs and work together.

It’s easy to debug a program.

Beta; Each finger joint can move.

     The fingers can bend.

     MY HAND picks something up using 2fingers such as smart phone, pen etc.

From 02.2016 to 05.2016

Future works will focus on making more natural actions with MY HAND by installing actuators at both right and left side of each finger.

Currently, MY HAND can only measure the resistance of objects using SMA. Future works would integrate pressure and flexure sensors to make a more accurate artificial hand.
