Abstract: In this project, the behavior of the driver and the vehicle as well as the cause of the road accidents is addressed. How to investigate the cause of an accident by recording some data like steering angle, alcohol sensing, seat belt, location and speed etc. is presented which is quite unique and innovative talking in context to Indian automobile manufacturers. If an accident has occurred then how to intimate the relatives or to the nearest police station so as to avoid major tragedy is presented. For showing the exact location in maps, window in LabVIEW is designed which is a powerful tool for automation and presenting the vital information in graphical way. It reduces the hardware complexity of the system by making efficient use of programming with the help of VIs(Virtual Instruments) which are GUI based applications that can be programmed on LabVIEW. This new approach will benefit the business by reducing software life cycle time and faster release of new products into the market.
Project Vision: Everyday the media brings us the horrible news on road accidents. Once a report said that the damaged property and other costs may equal 3 % of the world’s gross domestic product. Taking into account the Indian road conditions, accidents keep on taking place every now and then. Again many times there is no information or clue why a particular accident took place. Whether it was drivers fault or there was some other problem in the vehicle itself? If we see the Indian automobile market, none of the car manufacturers have this kind of facilities (applications) integrated into one even in their premium cars. So we can have this kind of system in the cars and can investigate the cause of the accident as it is a real time system. If necessary preventive measures are taken, number of road accidents can be reduced. Next we are thinking that if everything goes well and in time then we would like to add some safety features like lane departure warning, auto speed braking etc. in the latter stage to this project which will be a complete package.
Software Tools being used: National Instruments LabVIEW 7.1 and toolkits
Hardware tools being used: Different sensors, PIC 16F877A controller, GPS and GSM module.
