3 Broken RIOs

Hello, I tried making a request to get the RIOs replaced but the customer service rep requested that I make a forum post first to try and resolved my issues. So here is the breakdown

1) The first Rio (Rio2) I don't have in my possession right now, it is at the shop to be used as a testing platform. But it's problem was that at a regional's finals it broke and wouldn't turn on / work properly. I did manage to re-flash it's firmware and image, it now works but the mentors say we should send it in anyway if it will cost us a Finals.

2) The second RIO, S/N ending in "1C," is a Rio1 from 2016 I did manage to re-flash (firmware & image) it but it does randomly not turn on and gives a Unrecoverable error 50% the time when you power it on, so I have tested it a little bit, but I started out with connecting and disconnecting the power like 6 times before I get lucky and it turns on. That being said it also seems to have an issue with comms and sometimes will not connect to driver station for no reason, ports not tested but at least USB-B port works.

4) The third RIO (Rio1), S/N ending in "51," can not be updated, firmware and image are out of date and therefore can not be used. The USB-B port is broken, so the main way of Re-Imaging is broken. I have tried SSH-ing in and tried to reformat, reflash, and numerous other things and nothing worked. The electrical mentor also tried updating it and gave up after a few hours. USB-A factory reset also results in Unrecoverable Error.

If anyone has advice or a course of action I'd love the input. ❤️

Hi Janelyn,

I hope you are doing well! My name is Diego and I'll be assisting you in this thread.

About the RIOs we have the following input

  1. The first RIO we understand that it's currently working, can we keep working with this RIO so we can confirm that it does not show the error anymore?
  2. With the second RoboRIO,
    1. can we try to connect to it over the ethernet port.
    2. Hold down the reset button for 5-10 seconds to enter into safemode. The light will be flashing once we are there
    3. Then update the firmware and then re-image
    4. Run any test
  3. What do you mean by "The USB-B port is broken"?
    1. We could also try the steps for the second roborio using the ethernet port
