I run into the same issue with the desire to integrate the VirtualBench in a linux & python measurement environment.
The Specification is mentioning a port 9090/tcp for the instrument protocol.
Will this protocol be really changed on such a regular basis that it can't be dublicly documented? A change wouldcreate the need to maintain applications for iPad and Windows accordingly.
However, for non Lab-View people after 3 years the C-API as it seems is still the only way to control this handy box with own software. Attached ist a screen shot of the C-Reference that comes with the C-API. The selected Lib init is the only documented function set. All other functionality has to be looked up from some examples and the nivirtualbench.h as the best source of information. Frankly spoken, to me this is not what I'm used to see from NI.
