use virtual bench in virtual machine

Hi all,

It is my first time using virtual bench. I have a MAC. I figured I need to run the software of Virtual Bench in a virtual machine. I have Win 7 installed in Virtual Box on my MAC.

After I install the software of Virtual Bench in the virtual machine, I connect the Virtual Bench and MAC with a USB cable. The autorun did not start, and opening the software manualy leads to a window with "search for device" at which I don't know what to do next. Also, my OS X will pop an error message : "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer" with options either "ignore" or "eject".

Thanks for any comments.

The VirtualBench software pops up the "search for device" dialog if it can't find a VirtualBench connected over USB; it's intended to let you find VirtualBenches on your network.

It sounds like you may need to tell VirtualBox to connect the USB connection for the VirtualBench to the guest OS.

On the Windows version of VirtualBox 4.3, this is under the Devices menu -> USB Devices -> select your VirtualBench device. The OS X version of VirtualBox's menu is probably located in a similar fashion.

Thanks for the response.

Actually, I can see the device "NI VB" (something like this) in that dropdown list. But it is greyed out. I also assume it has something to do with the Virtual box not passing the USB to the Windows.

It probably displays as "NI VB-8012" (the model number).

Looking at this stackexchange post, it seems like VirtualBox tries to be clever with USB Mass Storage Devices (and VirtualBench presents itself as one). You may need to direct OS X to eject the "disk" first.

If I select "Eject" the error message will keep poping up.

I am also searching for solution myself and come accross this suggestion:
"1. Shut down the guest machine.

2. Highlight the guest machine in the VirtualBox panel.

3. Plug your usb device.

4. Click on blue USB category.

5. Click the green plus icon to add your device.

6. Your usb device should now be visible, click to add that."

Now I see the device shown in the drop down list not greyed out but checked with a check mark. I even see a pop up message for installing the driver.

The problem is that after the pop up message for installing the driver, it says installation fails. In the meantime, I have downloaded that driver installation before and installed it. I tried download and reinstall. Now the pop up message is gone. But still no auto play, and still asking for "search for device"

To follow up with the issue:

Right now, when I start Win 7 in Virtualbox with the USB connected, I could see the Virtualbench in the dropdown list Devices->USB Devices->National Instruments NI VB-8012.  which is also checked.

When I go to: Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers, I see NI VB-8012 listed as "unspecified" device. Right click the icon of NI VB-8012, I choose: troubleshoot, and am poped with: reinstall device driver. Clicking the: apply this fix down below, shows: Troubleshooting was unable to automatically fix all the issues found. You can find more details below: USB Composite Device has a driver problem... Not fixed.

Unplug the USB and replug it, will make the device show up again as "unspecified".

I am stuck at this step. I am not sure why it asks me to reinstall the driver since I already intall the driver manually with NIVirtualBench111.exe.

Thanks,
