R/C car controlled by computer

Dear all,

My name is Panayiotis and I’m studying Electrical Engineer at University of Cyprus. My major project is to build an R/C car controlled by computer. To do this I think that I will need RF transmitter and receiver and software to control these by computer. I was wondering if you could help me on my project with your products and your knowledge.

Thank you in advance,
Panayiotis

Howdy Panayiotis!

You can find out information about our RF platform here.  It have details about all of our RF products as well as general information about RF test which you may find useful for your project.

If you can provide us with specific details regarding the requirements for your system then we can better help you determine the right products to use.

Do a google search for 'rc pc interface'. You might also want to start at the rc forums, especially if you already have a transmitter and want to interface to that.

Dear Red Barron,

Thank you for answering my message. First I would like to tell you exactly what I have in mind so you can really help me. I will buy an R/C car from the market and my job is to “hack” it in order to be able to control it by computer.

I think that I will need a set of analog transceiver to do that. I want a transmitter with compatible software and a receiver which will be placed on the car. I will give commands from the software on my pc, the transmitter will send these commands to the receiver on the car and the car will execute. One other matter that bothers me I that the signal should be analog in order to control the speed of the car.

The commands I want the car to execute are:

- Go forward (with speed control)

- Go reverse

- Turn right

- Turn left

I'm impressed that as a student, you have the budget to consider the hardware that Red Barron linked to. Otherwise, just find an inexpensive 2 channel AM transmitter and receiver with a buddy box connection and build one of the interfaces you find when you do the google search.

Did you do an internet serch on the topic?  I found a number of sites showing how to hack an R/C transmitter online very quickly by typing "R/C car controlled by computer" in the earch engine.

Hi Panayiotis,

If you are just trying to hack the RC controller to interface with a PC then the RF equipment I linked is waaay beyond the scope of your project.  I over assumed what you were trying to accomplish.  As Wentworth mentioned, there are plenty of tutorials for hacking together RC car control on the Internet.  Here are a few that look pretty good:
