I second the class...great way to learn afresh and even reinforce what you already think you know. I do also like the process that psammut outlined. I more or less did all those things suggested, fishing through a lot of stuff along the way. Having it spelled out like that is nice. Then I took the course...really helpful (in fact, I'm going to take it again soon with my new coworkers who don't know AF).

I would third the class - but I might be biased as it's my favourite course to teach! 😉

Another step-by-step example can be found here.
It's a simple 3 actor system with main actor that launches a counter and a timer.
Each example shows another architecture, going from very basic to complex.
Example 4b is the one that uses abstract messages.
