J 1850 NI CAN cards

Hello,

Do the NI CAN cards support the J 1850 Series 2 CAN?

Also, can someone refer me to a document that specifies what CAN protocals the NI CAN cards support.

Thanks

Dan

Hello Dan:

NI CAN does not support J1850. The readme file that is included with the driver explains in more detail about the supported protocols.

Hello Roland,

I am having trouble finding the readme file.  This is the one I found.  Could you send me the readme file that contains the information on what protocalls are supported.

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

J1850 is actually a completely different physical bus from CAN and is not electrically compatible.  It is older and is being phased out of most automotive applications, so we do not plan on offering interfaces for it.  The USB-CAN High Speed interfaces are High-Speed CAN (ISO-11898).

As far as CAN protocols go, we have several options:

KWP2000, Diagnostics On CAN (UDS) and OBD-II on CAN support are added by the Automotive Diagnostic Command Set, which works with all NI CAN interfaces. This toolkit also includes an implementation of the ISO 15765-2 transport protocol and the Volkswagen Transport Protocol 2.0.

CCP and XCP support are implemented through the ECU Measurement and Calibration Toolkit.

J1939 is not currently supported, but let me know if you are interested in this protocol.

I am interested in hearing more about your application.

Thanks for you response Paul,

I am in the process of quoting a job and the protocall used to comunicate with the board is J1850.  I am just looking what it would take to talk to the boad.  I found this link which looks interesting.

http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=86158&requireLogin=False

I have gotten requests for CAN comunication in the past, but they always seem to be some old goofy protocall that isn't compatable with the NI CAN cards.  It would be great if you guys had a list of what CAN protocalls are supported with your CAN boards.  I haven't been able to find one yet.  I have heard about a readme file that contains this, but I haven't been able to find it.

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

The protocols you can do with NI CAN include several options when you consider our toolkits:

KWP2000, Diagonstics on CAN (UDS), and OBD-II on CAN are support in the Automotive Diagnostic Command Set.

CAN Calibration Protocol (CCP and XCP) is supported using the ECU Measurement and Calibration toolkit.

As far as other older buses, including J1850, Ford SCP, GM VSI-C2, and ISO9141 those are not directly supported by NI hardware and we don't have plans to support them as they are quickly becoming obsolete.  In 2008, all US production vehicles will have CAN in them.  These buses typically have 3rd party interfaces available that have LabVIEW API's, so you shouldn't be left in the dark with them.

One option is the Gryphon from Dearborne Group (www.dgtech.com) which has a LabVIEW toolkit available.  It supports J1850 J1939, and CAN.  If I remember correctly, it is a little pricier, but I have used the API before and it's a good experience.

Hope this helps.
