USB-8473 External Power (VBAT)

Has anyone ever had to power the USB-8473 CAN interface using external power (pin 9 of the D sub)? If so, under what conditions? The hardware manual states, "Optional CAN power supply if bus power or external VBAT is required." How do I know when it is required? Also, changing the jumper setting (if there is one on this hardware) would require removing a screw, opening the housing, and breaking the seal. Wouldn't this invalidate my warranty? Thanks for any help on this.

If CAN network you connect 8473 to doesn't provide bus power, you need to connect external power. The only way to know is to check the CAN network. Normally, I'll just simply connect 8473 withoutpower. If it doesn't work, try external power.

The 8473 does not require VBAT power. It gets all required power internally.
