Sounds like either you do not have NI-MAX installed, or NI-MAX has been corrupted or partially deleted for some reason.
The NI-CAN driver installation should have installed the current version of MAX if it was needed. There may have been a problem when upgrading and older version of MAX. You could try uninstalling CAN, MAX and DAQ, then reinstall all the latest drivers and see if that takes care of it.
If that doesn't do it, I'd put a call into NI support and see if they can sort it out.
