In a worst case scenario, that's permanent.
There is no such thing as an instantaneous heart rate, just a "elapsed time since last beat". 😄

That is what makes it very hard to determine a frequency from a digital signal. Especially if the frequency can be low and high. You can't use the same strategy to calculate the frequency, at least not accurately and responsively.
What is even harder is to explain this to a customer.
