I have been wondering this for a while, to me it seems like microsoft got some sort of mental high-level problem focussing?
Or perhaps merely run in a yahoo style by a tech-illiterate Bald Bozo?
All half-baked and recently dumped: (congrats if you chose this tech path)
Silverlight, .NET, C#, VB, WPF, ..., etc..
The most recent focus: (at least for the next 2 hours, with hordes of dev's scrambling to learn)
HTML5, C++, JS
Am I glad NI is keeping the course since the 80's with LV.

You're welcome to decide for yourself whether you believe it or not.
And another relevant one when you're talking about the web - http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/APIWar.html

How is VPL doing, their graphical dataflow based programming tool? Did anyone ever compare it to LabVIEW?

Interesting since we just had a Microsoft rep come through the company I work for and do a presentation. Showing us how to program Windows 8 applications with C# and .NET. Said they are concentrating on .NET languages for producing Win 8 apps. Silverlight, though, is not in Win 8 and not going to be developed for Win 8. Yep, silverlight is gone.

There are some interesting cross-platform C++ libraries and GUI frameworks out there such as Boost and Qt. Going forward I would seriously evaluate and consider these instead of the Microsoftian .NET language focus of the hour.
