Speaking of fruit, do not put apples oranges and bananas together. The oranges will go bad quickly due to ethylene production. I learned this the hard way today...but i learned something new!

And when taking bananas in your lunch, consider one of these.

Also, the banana won't get crushed in your motorcycle tool kit, and you look real cool carrying one around - chicks dig it.

Did you read the review?! "Somewhat large but has to be to accomodate various sizes of fruit..."

My opinion: use a lunch box.

altenbach is under the impression that DVDs come from trees. (Reminds me of two friends growing up, one who thought peanuts were manmade, and one who thought pepperonis grew on pepperoni plants - not joking.)

Well they do grow on sprues

Back when DVD cost $80 a piece due to poor yield I was hired to write code to optimize the yields. Durrning this adventure I collected a handful of sprues as well as some half-DVDs that are no part of my technology museum.

After the two halfs where molded a brave little robot reached between the hydraulic press and the rest of the mold and grabs hold of the sprue to pull the disk-half out of the press. It quickly broke of the sprue and placed the disk on a conveyor to cool before the two half where coated and glued together.

Yes I had to stearch for that one.

I added some clarification and some hard numbers in a reply. 😄

Ben, this is almost too much for a Friday afternoon.  A few minutes ago, I did not even know what a sprue is. 🙂

(..and no, it has nothing to do with the Spruce Goose as I first thought. :D)

Apparently smercurio left his computer for a moment and someone with a sense of humor hijacked his computer for a couple of replies.

A bit sarcastic as well, something else that made me very suspicious.  He should really be more careful when he leaves his desk.

I'm guessing the two halves you mean are top and bottom rather than the left and right half?

Top n bottom yes.

Quick summary of how they were made about eight years ago.

Two molding machines, plastic injected via the sprue to form each of the two halves.

Robot pulls disk half, hands of to the conveyor and breaks off sprue.

Both cool on a conveyor to elimate distortion.

One half get a semi-transparent layer of gold.

The other half gets plated with aluminum.

UV curing epoxy applied to on half.

Other side is flipped and place on the other.

Spin to throw off extra epoxy and control disk thickness.

Blast with UV light to cure.

Run past a scanner to qucik check of flaws.

Done
