Hi Altenbach,

here's the plot for Germany:

This is somewhat leveled due to exchange rate changes of the Euro. In 2001 the rate was 1€~=0.80$, so the gas price would be nearly half (in Dollar) of what is plotted above. The stronger the Euro, the "cheaper" the gasoline in EuropeSmiley Wink

"dramatic increase in the use of public transportation" - this was reported in newspapers here tooSmiley Wink Here in Berlin I can use all public transportation for less than 2€ per day, no seldom need my car...

for me in Munich right now, still use my car everyday. the distance to work is 15km, but with S-bahn i need to change, which make the commute twice (!!) as long as the car, taking in account the very dense traffic and lights. i consider it is worth the higher price (and i have an efficient diesel).

But yesterday we had these football sized ice rubicons falling down from the sky (oui, le ciel nous est tombe sur la tete!), and so my car is totally dented. if you need to look depressed one day, just look at my car... 😞

Today we do a hommage to George Carlin who passed away on June 22, reflecting on decency standards and digital filtering....

(Here is some background for those who are not familiar with his routine)

This one is the best one yet.  I loved George Carlin and respected him greatly.  Great job, Altenbach.

Re George Carlin

Imagine Georges version of the "Hippy-dippy Wire-man" answering noob Q like "How do I read a file and display it in a graph?" >>>

"Wooow man, first you will start by dropping some things on the diagram. This will be followed by an increasing number of wires. Soon to followed by what sounds like someone quoting George Carlin's monologues... Wow, this is getting weird man!"

"Picture the diagram in your mind... All those lines and icons. The diagram will be dominated by a large state diagram. What state? Maybe the state of intoxication... AAAhhhhhh..."

I used to do the Al Sleet, Hippy Dippy Weatherman impression a lot. I was told that I was pretty good at doing Carlin impressions. He will be missed.

I remember George from the 70's when my brother was playing his albums, I would listen to them through the wall or through the air duct registers. Mom and dad would not have been pleased. Later when I had kids I thought it was ironic that he played a role in Shining Time Station and narrated Thomas the Tank Engine which they watch. What comes around goes around, I guess. RIP, George.

Keep up the laughs Altenbachhappy smiley
