This reminds me of Conway's Game of Life.
I think there are some versions in the community, but an old labVIEW 6 implementation by Dave Thomson can also be found here.

altenbach,
Wow I had never played with the 3D version before, very nice LabVIEW implementation. Conway's game of life is something my father programmed me as a kid in Quick Basic. It has taken on a life of it's own literally and I have seen complete computers build around the original rules . It is also referenced in Wolfram's, "New Kind of Science".
I felt this puzzle was a lot simpler than a full life like cellular automaton. So I'm still waiting to see if anyone takes the challenge
Great links Thanks,

Here's a very simple version. Scrolls left-to-right, and it does get edge effects, but it seems to work. I'm sure it can be improved upon.

The next Simple Labview Puzzle Challege (infact the first for 2012) involves images, specifically image cryptography. And no you don't need IMAQ to solve it. In fact the the base LabVIEW package should be plenty. You get two images...that's it. Find the secret message. I ask if you decode it don't show everyone...just send along a cryptic message that shows me you solved it. The prize is in the message:)
