You are describing a current project...  Oh boy it's hard to stay on target.  There are many nested "Jack-In-The-Box" at every corner...  Feels like going down the rabbit hole with more questions than answers...

And they wanted the project done before it started!

Reminds me of this xkcd comic.  Even when I start by researching something productive, I always seem to end up down some rabbit hole reading something barely connected to my project.
