Wolfram Research "started it"....
It seems that Mathematica recently added a detailed comparison between their product and Maple. For example, some of the performace benchmarks seem outrageous in their contrast.
In response, Maplesoft has published an analysis, showing that in fact their product Maple is actually superior and that the Wolfram tests were highly biased.
I don't used either product (Mathematica or Maple) so I have no way of judging all this. If anyone here is familiar with these product, feel free to chip in.

My feeling is the same, ask the Wolfram folks about Mathematica, ask the Maplesoft folks about Maple and draw your own conclusions. This is no different than expecting the Honda dealer to give you valid information about a Toyota.
Typically I respect the folks at Wolfram, a bit disappointed that they resorted to this.
