That could be group dynamics. With enough people around, everyone will think "why should I be the one to say something"...

EDIT: Or maybe they liked the music.

The polite way to diffuse the situation is to offer someone headphones, but he already had those!

Do you actually mean the music could have been worse?

Spoiler
Or are you rickrolling us (the ad saved me)?

Oh, I think that week of a continuous loop essentially Rickrolling the entire office would be a great way to introduce yourself to the team. 😄

USB Issues On New Computer

I was working at a place where we were making custom test equipment.  This project happened to involve a mini PC that was doing some dedicated DAQ stuff and displaying it to the user.  It was a small little PC that mounted to the back of a monitor and was nice and compact.  This PC then hooked up to a box that we had made where all the equipment was inside.  There was an single harness between this box and the PC that provided power, USB, and network to the mini PC and monitor. Inside the box was terminal blocks for all the DAQ and routing for all the wiring.  For some unknown reason the designer had a USB port to the PC routed to this terminal block and had a USB hub connected to it.  Right next to that USB terminal block was screw terminals for the 120VAC power that was also powering the PC.

We plugged in the PC and box and turned it on and it was working fine.  Windows booted up and we started installing our software. At one point we went to test the system and we realized the E-Stop button had been pressed.  So someone went over and reset it...at which point a huge white flash appeared inside the tester box and we heard a loud POP!  People in the area mentioned how they saw stars from the bright flash and asked what it was.  We opened the box trying to see where the problem was. I went over to the monitor of the PC and saw an error similar to this:

The PC seemed to still be working and the installation of software was still working, but no mouse or keyboard was responding.  We tried all USB ports on the PC and none did anything. Turns out someone accidentally wired 120VAC directly to the USB port on the PC.  I was mostly impressed that the PC still totally was usable as long as you used PS2 mouse and keyboard.  I also found it funny that after such a loud bang and flash, the PC just gently popped up a message that things weren't right.  We ended up buying a replacement PC of course, but kept the old computer around and used it for a few things around the office.  People would often times be confused when they would plug in a USB drive and it wouldn't be recognized.  I eventually put tape over all the USB ports and left a sticky note on it saying they didn't work.

I would not be surprised if the USB ports blowing up acted like a fuse, protecting the rest of the computer. It might even be designed that way, having an undersized trace acting as a fusible link to prevent the equipment to permanently burst into flames, taking the entire building with it. 😮
