How to create four booleans on the left?

and is the close reference necessary?

Those are references. To create the control reference, right click >> create >> reference.

I'm not sure if close reference does anything here.

You could use linked property nodes, but when you are doing similar things to many controls, it's easier to use an array with an unlinked property node.
