Configure NI 8255R trigger input

Hi. I'm somewhat new to Labview and FPGA programming so maybe this question is very basic. I have a NI 8255R PCI device for my project to do image adquisition and to activate other devices using external  triggers. I want to use ISO INPUT 5 signal as a Pulse generator trigger input but according to the manual (NI 8255R manual , page 35)  this function (triggering) is the alternate function of that ISO (it's primary function is to work as an input port latch). My doubt is if I  connect the trigger to that input it'll work as expected or first I would have to make some configuration via software to make ISO INPUT 5  work as its alternate function says (Pulse generator trigger input).  Thanks in advance.
