We have purchased a USB-6501 and are expecting delivery of this unit next week. In the meantime, I'd like to get a really good understanding on how the I/O direction is controlled in the USB-6501. (NOTE: I'm not sure of the exact type and version of Labview we're using, but this info might not be relevant for these questions anyway.)
1) Is it true that the direction can be controlled on a per-signal (I/O)pin basis? Just looking for a confirmation here.
2) Can the direction for a pin be switched while the unit is operating normally (on-the-fly)? If not, what is the procedure for changing directions? Does the USB-6501 have to be reset before directions can be changed?
3) Quick question concerning the resetting of the USB-6501. When one does this, what happens to the signal pins that were configured as outputs? Do they gracefully revert to inputs with weak pullups? No danger of glitches here?
Please describe what happens upon a reset.

Klaus,
As stated on page 5 of the USB-6501 User Guide, you can configure each line on an individual basis. This is done in software, and does not require a device reset. You would simply need to change the type of task that is accessing the device (Digital Input vs. Digital Output). Finally, the device does return to its initial state upon a device reset, a high-impedance input, though we cannot guarantee that glitching will not occur. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Hope this helps,
